Grey’s Anatomy is an American television series that revolves around the lives of surgical interns and visiting physicians, while these people try to balance their relationships and personal lives. It was first introduced in March 2005 as a mid-season show on the American Broadcasting Company.
The 14th season of this show was concluded recently with the season finale and a new season is on the cards. This show has a huge fan base because of its massive popularity and color-blind casting. However, there are many facts about the show, which even the craziest fans of Grey’s Anatomy might not be aware of.
Facts about the creator and lead of the show that you never knew!
The creator and the executive producer of the show, Shonda Rhimes, as usual, has created a great TV series that has left people glued to it. However, many people are not aware of the fact that Rhimes loves watching surgical shows on the Discovery Channel. When Patrick Dempsey, who plays Derek Shephard, first turned up for auditions, he got scared of Rhimes because of her bland and stone cold expressions.
The narrator of the show, and the lead actor, Ellen Pompeo, who plays Meredith Grey, actually wanted to do Secret Service, another ABC pilot. But, the show never was kicked off and she was instead offered to play the lead in the series. All the lead actors were massive smokers, especially Ellen. In order to hide the pregnancy of Pompeo during the filming of the 6th season, the writers actually developed a plot where she gives part of her liver to her father.
The title was originally going to be something else!
There are various rumors regarding what the title of the show would have been. Different people have reported various titles that were actually the titles when the story of the show was on paper. A number of sites and fans have reportedly highlighted the title of the original pitch to simply be ‘Surgeons’. However, one of the lesser known facts regarding the initial titles is that Grey’s Anatomy was also going to be called ‘Complications’.
The creator was ready to set the show in the city of Chicago, but similarities with the locations of another medical drama, which was set in the exact same city, led to the emergence of setting up the location in Seattle, Washington.

The character of Alex Karev, which is played by Justin Chambers, was not even present in the original story that was written by Rhimes. He was introduced in the show after the pilot, and the funny thing is, he still remains to be a central part and character of the show even in the 13th season.
Katherine Heigl, who plays Izzie Stevens in the show, likes knitting and baking in real life as well. Contrasting with this, Lexie Grey, who is a graduate of the Harvard Medical School, is played by Chyler Leigh, who is actually a dropout from high school. Jessica Capshaw originally auditioned for three different parts on the show before she actually won the part of Arizona Robbins.
